Corporate Overview

In the 1990s, as an outgrowth of its experience in designing and operating self-unloading vessels, Canada Steamship Lines (CSL) began applying its knowledge to other marine-related dry bulk materials handling challenges our customers’ faced. In particular, CSL has been very active in designing, building, owning and operating transhipment facilities (equipment) and developing systems (knowledge-based logistics).

These facilities use CSL’s existing self-unloading technology and experience in different configurations. Transhipping (or transloading) involves the movement of cargo from one vessel to another (such as from a barge to an ocean going vessel for export or vice versa for import). Transhipping can also incorporate temporary offshore storage and short haul transportation.

Transhipment is generally undertaken when:

• the physical characteristics or infrastructure of the port do not meet market
  a conditions or demand.
• limited cargo volumes do not support investment in permanent / fixed infrastructure.

Examples would include shallow draft ports unable to accommodate certain vessel sizes or ports with insufficient, overtaxed or outdated infrastructure.

CSL Transhipment believes that a successful transhipment operation must combine strong logistical coordination skills (managing the tugs, barges, transhipment system and ocean going vessel) with consistent operating performance.

CSL's transhipment vessels and platforms are designed for high performance; built and operated in accordance with all applicable requirements relating to maritime safety, pollution prevention and cargo handling as directed by flag state legislation, international maritime conventions and international association of classification society rules. Such requirements include:

• The International Convention for the safety of life at sea ("SOLAS")
• The International Convention for the prevention of Pollution form Ships ("MARPOL")
• BLU Code, the Code of Practice for the Safe Loading and Unloading of bulk carriers
